Our archive of old maps of the Crediton area, and some drawings of improvement projects

Crediton Museum represents the following parishes: Bow, Cheriton Bishop, Cheriton Fitzpaine, Clannaborough, Coldridge, Colebrooke, Crediton, Crediton Hamlets, Down St Mary, Eggesford, Hittisleigh, Kennerleigh, Lapford, Morchard Bishop, Newton St Cyres, Nymet Rowland, Poughill, Sandford, Shobrooke, Stockleigh Pomeroy, Stockleigh English, Tedburn St Mary, Thelbridge, Upton Hellions, Whitestone, Woolfardisworthy (East), Zeal Monachorum.

We have a useful library of old OS maps featuring these parishes, and a collection of one-off maps of specific local interest. The latter includes a small collection of maps and architects' drawings relating to improvement projects, many of which, in addition to the project information, sometimes provide useful incidental information, e.g. names of owners of adjoining property.

Most items are stored at our Downes archive, which is not open to the public, and typically only visited by CAHMS personnel once a week. It is essential to contact us before visiting, so that items can be brought to the Museum for viewing, or copies made.

We have an article about old units of measurement which might help explain some of the units encountered in old maps.
